Guide to the European citizens’ initiative
A new right for EU citizens : you can set the agenda!
With the launch of the European citizens’ initiative on 1 April 2012, the EU took a big step in promoting participatory democracy. Since then, over 20 initiatives have been prepared, two of them have already passed the required thresholds and more than 5 000 000 signatures have been gathered — which shows that citizens are using this new instrument. This updated edition of the guide should contribute to raising awareness about the citizens’ initiative and help to make this innovative tool for participatory democracy even more effective. Have your say on the EU agenda!
