Generation adequacy is a key tool to assess security of supply in an electrical system. In Europe, the integration of high amount of variable generation, demand response, storage, distributed generation, the increase of interconnection capacities and the electricity markets coupling, motivate a need for a revision of how adequacy is assessed. This work presents a review of some European Member States, regions and ENTSO-E’s pan-European methodologies to highlight the latest developments and current trends. We examine a set of generation adequacy methodologies in Europe to highlight the latest... developments and current trends. We show that regional and pan-European assessments are used to reveal the situation of an integrated functioning of the European electricity system and market. The scope of national, regional and Pan-European assessments shall be established to obtain a minimum harmonization of the regulatory framework and methods. Capacity assessments should be complemented with further assessments (e.g. flexibility) as variable renewable energy penetration increases.
