The European Union is a unique political and economic partnership of 28 European countries. It was created in the aftermath of the Second World War and currently has over 507 million citizens and 24 official languages. All Member States of the European Union are at the same time members of the United Nations. The EU and the UN share fundamental values and work together closely across all three pillars of the UN: peace and security, human rights and development. The EU and its Member States are also the UN’s largest financial contributors.
