Design and validation (in accordance with ISO rules) of graphical symbols conveying certain safety warning messages to be used for child-care articles
Final report - Study
This report presents a study entitled “Design and validation in accordance with ISO rules of graphical symbols conveying 6 safety or warning messages to be used for child-care articles” identified by CEN/TC 252: (1) Never leave your child unattended ; (2) Always use this product with adult supervision ; (3) Always use the restraint system ; (4) A safety message indicating the range of age, weight or height of a child for which the product is intended ; (5) Before each use check carefully. Stop using at the first sign of damage or weakness ; (6) Keep away from naked flame and heat source. The... study includes research on existing standardised symbols that convey the same or similar meaning; the process of designing symbols for those messages following ISO/IEC standards; and the cross-European validation process with consumers following ISO standard specifications (ISO 9186-1-2014, ISO 9186-2-2008, and ISO 9186-3-2014). The results show the graphical symbols best understood by the user population. Most of them meet the criteria of acceptability (ISO/TC145/SC 2). Others show high levels of comprehension. For one message, the level of comprehension was lower than 50%. Some differences were found between countries. A final recommendation based on the results is given.
