Development of tools for reduction of energy demand and CO2-emissions within the iron and steel industry based on energy register, CO2-monitoring and waste heat power generation (ENCOP)

The aim of the ENCOP project is the development of tools for the reduction of the energy demand and CO2 emissions of an integrated steelwork. The relevant operational data, energy flows and CO2 emissions of the integrated steelworks of LUCCHINI in Piombino (in the following LU) and ArcelorMittal in Eisenhüttenstadt (in the following AMEH) have been analysed and stored in a database. Based on energy balances the potentials to save energy and to reduce the CO2 emissions were studied. Furthermore the reuse of waste heat for power generation was evaluated. Within the project different tools... were developed that help to analyse the process data, to monitor the energy demand and CO2 emission of the integrated steel mill and to create reports. These tools shall visualise variations of the process variables and help to monitor the CO2 emissions of an integrated steel mill. Furthermore additional models have been developed that help to study influences on the energy demand and CO2 emissions. These tools can be used to create a forecast of the energy demand or to compare different plants or operation modes in order to minimize the energy demand and CO2 emissions. A further step of the project is to reduce the energy demand by a utilization of waste heat for a power generation. Different technical concepts to use waste heat for a power production have been studied and were compared within this project. Investment costs of these technologies were calculated too. The application of the ORC technology has been studied at two examples of the steelworks AMEH and Lucchini. Finally the energy demand and CO2 emission of the two integrated steel plants have been compared with reference data, benchmarks and best practices in order to determine a further potential for savings. These studies shall help to optimise the production processes and decrease the energy demand of integrated steelworks.
