  The European Pillar of Social Rights is the EU's most ambitious social initiative in decades. Its success is a top priority for this Commission, which strives to protect citizens' rights in our rapidly changing society. The Pillar's 20 principles and rights aim to promote social convergence and to tackle social challenges in a new world of work. This book shows how these principles and rights are already transforming people's lives. The Commission has already taken strides in ensuring these principles and rights find their way into EU legislation on clear and transparent working conditions; on extending social protection to everyone; and a work-life balance initiative allowing parents and carers to combine work and family life more effectively. We asked young European people to take part in the #MySocialRights photo competition. They were asked 'How do you perceive your social rights in Europe?' and encouraged to answer with a photo, focusing on one of the 20 principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights. The 15 best photos were on display at the European Youth Even in Strasbourg in May 2018. The top photos are included in this book.

  This catalogue presents 28 case studies of Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) implementation across the European Union and encompasses a range of initiatives related to the organisation of food and material assistance schemes, accompanying measures and social inclusion initiatives as well as the manner in which FEAD initiatives can potentially complement other EU-funded (e.g. ESF) programmes. The catalogue is one of several outputs deriving from knowledge-sharing activities of the FEAD Network in 2018. This community of practice has been established by the European Commission to allow all stakeholders and partner organisations to share tools, ideas and resources that can help with the delivery of FEAD-funded initiatives.

  The EC launched an open public consultation on ‘EU Funds in the area of Cohesion’ on 10 January this year which ran until 9 March. It covered the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund, the European Social Fund) the European Aid to the Most Deprived, the European Globalisation Fund and the European Programme for Employment and Social Innovation. It was conducted through an online questionnaire covering five multiple-choice and four open questions on the policy challenges facing the Funds, their success in responding to them, the added-value of the Funds, the obstacles to achieving their objectives and the means of simplifying their administration. In all 4,395 valid responses were received, 438 of which were identified as part of a campaign. Some 582 respondents also submitted a position paper. This report summarises the results of the questionnaire and the points made in the replies to the open questions and in the positon papers.

Almost 5,000 people have already started their placements in projects dealing with various topics such as environment, culture, social services, helping refugees, migrants, children or the elderly. The European Solidarity Corps is more than only volunteering. It also creates opportunities for young people to develop their skills and increase their future labour market prospects via a job or a traineeship.

  Almost 25 million children under 18 are at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the European Union. Poverty deprives children of educational opportunities, childcare, access to health care, adequate food and housing, family support and even protection from violence. As a result, children living in poverty are more likely to become impoverished adults whose own children will live in poverty. Breaking this cycle of disadvantage presents a serious challenge, but efforts to do so are gaining momentum. This report outlines data and survey findings that highlight the magnitude of child poverty in the EU, but also presents tools available to counter this phenomenon and keep track of progress made. In so doing, it aims to foster action to help make tomorrow’s Europe truly social by investing in our future – Europe’s children – today.
