  This midterm review takes stock of the progress since the launch of the EU framework for national Roma integration strategies (NRISs) in 2011. It is based on data on how the situation of Roma have changed and input from national authorities, civil society and other partners. The review confirms the added value of the framework, the relevance of EU Roma integration goals and the continued need for a combination of targeted and mainstream approaches. The most important improvements prompted by the EU framework include:  the commitment to addressing Roma integration as a priority at European and national levels  structures for cooperation and coordination among Roma inclusion stakeholders  the development, implementation and monitoring of national strategies and integration measures, and  the mobilisation and alignment of legal, policy and funding instruments to fight discrimination and promote Roma inclusion With the development of the necessary structures, the conditions are in place to make a difference in the life of Roma. As regards real change in the situation of Roma between 2011 and 2016, however, it is clear that five years is too short a period to undo centuries of discrimination and deprivation. Progress is visible mainly in the area of education; in particular, the growing participation of Roma children in early childhood education and care points to strong potential for their later development. On the other hand, early school-leaving and poverty risk among Roma, though declining, are still far too high. The growing proportion of young Roma who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) is an alarming signal that translating results in education into employment and other areas requires a more effective fight against discrimination. The review also identifies key priorities for Member States to address and ways to strengthen the EU Framework for NRIS.

  Since its launch in 2013, the Youth Guarantee has supported millions of young people across the European Union to find a job, a traineeship, an apprenticeship or to continue in education. Yet despite this, too many young Europeans are still without work. Across the EU, more effort is needed so that all young people can benefit from quality offers under the Youth Guarantee. This report is one in a series of five reports on Youth Guarantee delivery, presenting existing practices from the ground from the first five years of its implementation. It outlines lessons learnt, challenges and success factors, aiming to inspire and help all actors involved in delivering the Youth Guarantee. The report on Traineeships under the Youth Guarantee looks at how traineeship schemes can be successful learning experiences for young people, in supporting them to acquire essential skills for the labour market. It also takes a look at different measures that contribute to the quality of traineeships and prevent their misuse.

  The higher education sector has experienced profound changes in the past two decades. Despite recent demographic declines to higher education cohorts in some countries, student numbers overall have increased, while the higher education sector has diversified and experienced numerous structural changes. Academic staff are in the frontline of dealing with increasing societal demands, but have systems adjusted to enable them to keep pace with these rapid changes? 'Modernisation of higher education in Europe: academic staff – 2017' explores the current realities for academic staff within the fast-changing European higher education landscape. The report examines the qualification requirements for academic staff, the recruitment process, employment and working conditions in academia, external quality assurance, and central level strategies for internalisation. The report is largely based on a mixture of qualitative and quantitative data, and covers higher education systems in 35 countries. The report focuses on the most representative categories of higher education staff, primarily those responsible for teaching and/or research. The report also contains national diagrams which provide a visual overview of the most representative categories of academic staff in the country concerned. For each staff category, a number of information are presented including main duties, qualification requirement, contracts and statistical information. This 'Eurydice highlights' provides a snapshot of some of the main findings of the report.

  ESCO is the European classification of occupations, skills, qualifications and competences developed by the European Commission. It works on solutions to connect European jobseekers and employers. Using the common language of ESCO, employers can assess CVs from different European countries regardless of where they come from. ESCO describes 3000 occupations and 13000 skills and competences and displays different qualifications in 27 languages. It makes CVs and job vacancies more transparent.

  The higher education sector has experienced profound changes in recent years. As student numbers have continued to increase, new steering and funding mechanisms have been established, quality assurance systems have been further developed and societal demands have expanded. Yet there has been too little focus on the impact and implications of these developments for academic staff, who play a vital role in higher education institutions and systems. This Eurydice brief is based on a comprehensive report, 'Modernisation of higher education in Europe: academic staff – 2017' published in June, which explores the realities for academic staff in this changing higher education landscape. The brief focuses on some of the main findings, including on human resource policy planning, academic careers, working conditions, and teaching. It concludes by highlighting three key concerns for policy-making: levelling the playing field for academic careers, balancing institutional autonomy and government oversight, and improving information gathering on academic staff.
