  The European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) is unique; it is the only award for books by new and emerging authors from so many countries. Since its launch in 2009 the Prize has been awarded to a total of 108 remarkable authors from altogether 37 European countries, all writing in their own languages. With this Prize we showcase the wealth and true diversity of Europe's contemporary literature and continue to inspire and encourage the translation, publication, selling and reading of books from other countries. 2018 is a special year for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, marking a centenary of independence. This is the perfect occasion to celebrate the cultures and the long literary traditions of these three countries and enhance both the visibility and the international success of Baltic authors and books.

  The goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive and updated review of the theoretical and empirical economic literature on tax and entrepreneurship, taking also into account a number of open, tax-related questions raised by the changing nature of entrepreneurship, symbolised by the growing importance of the collaborative economy. Case studies complement the literature review by exemplifying the key relationships between entrepreneurship, the collaborative economy and the tax system. Based on the literature review and the case studies, the report develops a framework of analysis that allows to highlight the main tax policy options to support entrepreneurship in the traditional and the collaborative economy.

  Joseph Roth possessed a sharply observant eye which allowed him to clearly read the signs of his times – those divided years of the 1920s and 1930s in Europe – a quality that has earned him the dubious epitaph “prophet”; a drunken prophet, as Europe’s demise into another world war went hand in hand with his own physical decline through alcoholism. Roth, his black coat draped around his shoulders, newspaper under his arm, cigarette and drink in hand while slowly moving from one hotel to another, was a border crosser, a train traveller, an observer and a hotel patriot. He was a literary exile who chose an itinerant existence; a highly prolific journalist and novelist who entertained friends and acquaintances at his café table in Paris and who drank himself to death at the early age of 44. Often noted for his cosmopolitan flair, Roth received extraordinarily high book advances but spent most of his time in a perpetual financial worry; a man who, in line with his skilled journalistic eye for detail, had a great passion for the miniature universe of watches and clocks, a predilection mirrored in his miniscule and delicate handwriting.

Their adventures shape our initial knowledge of human virtues and vices and our perceptions of good and evil in the world. Fairy tales open our senses to the unknown, helping us overcome our first fears and chase after our dreams. Fairy tales, from time immemorial, have transcended time, distances, and borders.   This thesis investigates the dissemination of the plays of the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen to Denmark, Germany and Britain. The investigation covers the time from when Ibsen’s dramas were first attempted to be introduced to the time when they broke through in each of the three countries spanning the period 1852-1893. In this way, the thesis offers both a synchronic and diachronic view of the process. The thesis’ approach builds on theories of cultural transfer and investigates the agents that carried out the transfer, the cultural markets through which the plays were disseminated and finally how they were integrated into local culture. Through the three case studies, the thesis offers a transnational scope on the transfer of Ibsen’s drama as well as incorporating a plurality of perspectives to show how the transfer was contested and negotiated locally. The cultural markets, such as local and transnational book and theatrical markets, are investigated to show how structural conditions influenced the transfer, and contemporary notions of nation and national literature are explored to place the transfer in an ideational context. Thus, the investigation of the transfer of Ibsen’s plays offers a prism for the study of cultural markets, agency in the field of culture and the circulation of Scandinavian cultural products in the latter half of the nineteenth century.

  Western medical tradition, resting on Hippocrates and Galen, has been divided into two parts: hygiene (or dietetics) – the conservative/preventive part, and therapeutics – the curative part. Historians and sociologists of medicine have shown an unparalleled interest in the curative side of medicine, an interest that possibly reflects the focus of modern western medicine on curing disease. Conversely, the conservative side of medicine and prevention as a medical method and process has attracted far less scholarly attention in the studies in the history of medicine. Nonetheless, in both the Hippocratic and Galenic works that dominated medical thought and practice until well into the seventeenth century, medicine was not only conceptualized as the art of curing disease but also as the art of preserving health – the art of wellbeing. The Renaissance in Italy saw the recovery and revival of the classical dietetic literature by the medical humanists, which had a profound impact on the organisation of academic medicine and brought developments in the preventive paradigm. During the sixteenth century the genre of preventive literature flourished, with numerous medical writings being published in both Latin and the vernacular. These medical writings (academic treatises, health manuals, books of secrets, etc.), which were shaped by historical events and socio-cultural parameters, reflect contemporary perceptions of and attitudes to health and disease. In this historical background the present study examines the De arte gymnastica (Venice, 1569), a medical treatise by the humanist physician Girolamo Mercuriale of Forlì (1530-1606). In his De arte gymnastica Mercuriale promotes the medical gymnastics as an ideal method for the conservation and/or obtainment of health based on the benefits of exercise in the maintenance of health and the treatment of disease. Providing a reading of Mercuriale's work in terms of a medical discourse, the present study aims to throw additional light on the historical understanding of Mercuriale's De arte gymnastica as a sixteenth-century medical treatise and his medical gymnastics as a method of preventive medical treatment, addressing Mercuriale's claims regarding aspects of medical theory and practice. In this endeavour the present study identifies Mercuriale's De arte gymnastica as a product of the sixteenth-century Roman context, taking into consideration Mercuriale's professional post as the personal physician of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520- 4 1589), a leading Churchman and one of the richest and most powerful patrons of his day. In this context the present study demonstrates how Mercuriales' medical discourse as a court physician addressing the elite audience of Rome corresponded to contemporary medical needs, issues, debates but as well as to social-cultural demands and aspirations as these emerged in a time of religious and spiritual crisis that was marked by the Council of Trent.

Undoubtedly travel is necessary and useful for many different purposes, but the real goal of every journey is to grow inwardly as humans. The person who returns is not the same one who left. Exactly the same words could be used to describe the importance and the effect of reading… The EESC is very proud to be hosting its eighth session of lunchtime of readings by contemporary European authors, this time focused on travel experiences; discovering the world, oneself and others. The works of Eurydice Trichon Milsani, Stéphane Lambert, Zdravka Evtimova and Ine Roox will transport you to distant countries, as well as to mysterious dimensions of artistic creation, the territories of the unconscious, fantasy and dreams. These authors have been nourished by contrasting traditions, because they come from different countries: Greece, Bulgaria, France and Belgium, and because of their varying ages, personalities, interests and aspirations. These have led them to the Orient, to the United States, to the Mediterranean, Africa and Italy...
