  This Special Eurobarometer survey, conducted for the European Parliament at the mid-point of the 2014-2019 parliamentary term, focuses on Europeans’ attitudes two years before the European elections of May/June 2019. The fieldwork for this Eurobarometer survey of the European Parliament was carried out between 18 and 27 March 2017. The survey was conducted by Kantar Public through face-to-face meetings with 27 901 EU citizens in the 28 Member States.

  The Capital Markets Union aims to get money — investments and savings — to flow more easily across the EU so that it can benefit consumers, investors and companies. It is an integral part of the Juncker Commission’s ambition to sustain growth in Europe. The Capital Markets Union aims to break down remaining barriers that block cross-border investments in the EU and make it easier for EU companies and infrastructure projects to get the finance they need, regardless of where they are located. It also fosters sustainable finance, providing investors with more choice to invest in environmentally friendly companies and projects, making the EU a global leader in this field. More integrated financial markets complement the Banking Union by creating a cushion to absorb sudden shocks, and allowing risk to be shared by private actors across EU borders, making the Economic and Monetary Union stronger and more resilient. This, in turn, creates an incentive for market participants to use the euro, therefore reinforcing its international role.

  Civil society intends to play its part in the run up to the European elections scheduled for 23-26 May. With the aim of mobilising members and organisations at all levels, the European Economic and Social Committee organised an event entitled Civil Society for rEUnaissance on 21 February 2019. The event was moderated by Shada Islam, Director of Europe and Geopolitics at Friends of Europe, a renowned and influential independent think tank based in Brussels. In the words of the EESC President, Luca Jahier, the purpose of the event was to “rally the troops” around the European Union to defend it against those who pretend to save it by killing it. Populist parties have tripled their vote in Europe over the past 20 years. They are in government in 11 European countries. More than a quarter of Europeans voted for populists in their last elections.
