The aim of the project was to find an effective way for selection of optimal raw materials to obtain the highest quality coke for the steel production. The approach to the problem was twofold: optimization of coal blends composition and prediction of coke quality straight from these blends properties. To fulfil this goal, a set of 56 single coal samples, originating from the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, also South and North Americas and South Africa were analysed. The results of proximate and rheological analyses, as well as petrographic: maceral, microlithotype, vitrinite and all maceral reflectance, sum of reactive macerals, and fluorescence, accompanied by Raman spectroscopy, porosity and thermographic tests were completed. Coals were carbonized on laboratory scale and their calculated CRI and CSR values were compared with analytical results. As a result, the vitrinite (Rr%) and all maceral mean reflectance (RrScan%), together with the sum of the reactive microscopic components formula (ΣRe%) was found, according to the pilot scale tests as the most accurate, speedy and cheep tool for prediction of coke strength and reactivity. Parallel investigations were carried out to find the most suitable alternative fuels for the high quality coke production. Rubber, anthracite, light polymers and HPS-ABS Polymers were tested. As a result, only HPS-ABS Polymers did not lower the obtained coke quality. At the final stage of the project 15 fully industrial tests on coal blends composed from analysed coals have been completed. Their predicted CSR/CRI values correlated with those tested on cokes, revealed correlation coefficients as high as 0.971 (for CSR) and 0.958 for CRI respectively.
