3. Statement by the President
The President made a brief statement in which he referred to the fact that Aung San Suu Kyi, winner of the Sakharov prize in 1991, was still being held under house arrest by the regime in Burma, where breaches of human rights were continuing. He reiterated Parliament's call for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and her associates, and, on behalf of Parliament, categorically condemned the abuses carried out by the Burmese regime.
4. Membership of Parliament
By Presidential Decree of 2 June 2005, Brice Hortefeux had been appointed to the French Government.
Since, pursuant to Article 7(1) of the Act concerning the election of representatives of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage, this office was incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Parliament — under Rule 4(4) of its Rules of Procedure — established that the vacancy had taken effect from 02.06.2005 and informed the Member State concerned thereof.
5. Membership of political groups
Giovanni Rivera had become a non-attached Member with effect from 06.06.2005.
6. Motion of censure on the Commission
The President announced that André Brie had withdrawn his signature from the motion of censure on the Commission (list of signatories: see Minutes of 12.05.2005).
The vote would be on Wednesday.
