Geopolitical changes after the fall of the Berlin Wall transformed Eutelsat’s original scope to serve customers in Western Europe. The organisation’s membership progressively expanded from the early 1990s to include all Eastern European countries. In step with the liberalisation of the telecoms sector, Eutelsat’s assets and activities were transferred from the intergovernmental organisation into a private company in July 2001.
