In the Publications Office, the Official Journal of the European Union is scrutinised every day to keep up-to-date nearly 3 000 consolidated acts, which integrate some 8 050 amending acts, in the official languages; including Bulgarian and Romanian. The number of linguistic versions depends on the availability of the basic act and all its modifiers and corrigenda in the various languages. The completion of the ‘2004 enlargement backlog’ of 1 592 acts integrating 7 232 modifying acts is a further step ahead to less red tape for European businesses and citizens and allows consultation of the law in a simpler format in 19 or 20 languages.
The consolidated acts are easily accessible on EUR-Lex. The ‘Directory of Community legislation in force’ lists all legal acts on which the consolidated text is based. Each part of the consolidated text is enriched with data identifying its origin (basic act, amending act or corrigendum). Furthermore, a separate Directory for consolidated acts to improve the overview of the current state of consolidation is under construction.
