European Capitals of Culture: the road to success From 1985 to 2010

The European Capitals of Culture is a flagship cultural initiative of the European Union, possibly the best- known and most appreciated by European citizens.

The programme is a clear illustration of the EU’s commitment to cultural diversity, and also of how culture can unite people within Europe.
